B.O.B. (Bug Out Bag)
Supplemental to the ‘72 Hour Kit’
ADDITIONAL FOOD AND WATER
- 4 - Bottles of Water
- 8 Individual emergency food rations, like Mainstay, Datrex, or MREs
- 1 Bag of whole-grain oatmeal, and some brown sugar (in a 1 gallon Ziplock bag)
- 1 Large package of peanut m&ms or 1 bag of trail mix (in a 1 gallon Ziplock bag)
- 12 Energy and/or Protein Bars (like Cliff energy bars & Cliff builder bars)
- 3 Packages of Beef Jerky
- 1 Backpacking water purifier (I recommend the Katadyn Vario)
- 1 Small container of salt or your favorite seasoning (for seasoning wild game)
ADDITIONAL CLOTHING
- 1 Pair Hiking Boots (water resistant)
- 1 Pair neoprene river shoes or water sandals (good enough to hike in)
- 1 Pair Inner Socks (nylon/moisture wicking), 1 Pair Outer (wool/warmth and protection)
- 1 Pair Underwear, 1 Pair Long Underwear or Under Armor (synthetic)
- 1 Long Sleeve Fleece Jacket
- 1 Long Sleeve T-Shirt and 2 Regular T-Shirts
- 1 Long Sleeve Rain Poncho / Rain Coat / Rain Pants / Parka
- 1 Ball Cap, Bandana, Beanie Hat, or Boonie Cover
HUNTING AND FISHING:
- Take-down .22 rifle with 200 rounds of ammo (and some gun oil)
- A good revolver with 100 rounds and a holster (like a .357 caliber Ruger or S&W)
- Fishing gear (rod, reel, hooks, sinkers, spinners, flies, spool of line)
- Wire snares for small game (like traps from TetonTrapCo.com)
- Quality fixed blade knife with sheath OR cold steel folding pocket knife (5+ inch blade)
TOOLS & OTHER ITEMS:
- Leatherman Multitool (like the Wave)
- Wrist watch (wind up if possible)
- Backpacking mess kit with pots & pans for cooking
- Heavy duty metal spoon (could be used for eating or digging)
- Sewing Kit (needles, thread, buttons, ...)
- Duct Tape, Super Glue, Dacron Thread
- 100 ft of 550 paracord
- Knife Sharpener
- Map of bug out location (laminated or sealed in Zip Lock bag), and a good compass
- Field guide to edible plants (region-specific)
- Insect repellant with DEET and SPF 50 Sunblock
- Beach towel
